My booth just got an upgrade…
After years of hearing this microphone on some of the world’s biggest commercials, documentaries, animations and game performances, I’ve finally added the legendary Neumann U87 to the studio. Do I need it? Some might say I don’t. Do I want it? YES!
The Neumann U87 is famed for its warm, detailed, cinematic and ridiculously smooth, this microphone has been trusted by generations of voice actors, broadcasters and recording artists for a reason. It captures every little nuance, from intimate narration and natural conversational reads to larger-than-life character performances. Every time I step into a studio with one, I have a moment of doe eyed-ness. Heck, it was my wallpaper on my phone for years
I used it at Channel 4 during my brief stint as a continuity announcer, and I’ve used it in London studios for video games, commercials, promos and every time I see it, I am green with envy. I never particularly know why, it’s not like the microphone will sudden unlock a power within that suddenly makes me a better voice actor, but sometimes, a creative just needs the right tools to inspire them to do more, change perspective, or work differently.
I know incredible actors using microphones much less notable, from Rode NT1a, Sennheiser MK4, Shure SM7b, even Blue Yeti (shudders). Regardless, they’re booking incredible work, before despite all this tech, really what matters is the performance.
Honestly? I fully understand why people speak about this mic like it’s some kind of sacred studio relic hidden inside a velvet-lined vault. It’s re-inspired me to get into the booth and focus on working on performance, a never ending craft of development.
Very excited to start recording with this beast.
